In 1984, she was the recipient o f the prestigious M acA rthur Prize Award, and in 1993 sh e w as a w a rd e d H arvard’s G eorge Ledlie Prize given for research that m akes the “m ost valuable co n trib u tion to science” and “the ben efit o f m ankind.” W hether w riting about the im portance o f relationships in schools and fam ilies o rth e lega cies one generation passes to the next, L aw rence-L ightfoot has dedicated h erself to “ deep ening the conversation” about issues that m atter to us, includ ing race, gender, culture, class an d h u m an d e v e lo p m e n t. B ringing b iography into the realm o f social science, she has m astered the art o f narrative as a pow erful m eans o f changing the way people think about our place in the world. L a w r e n c e - L ig h tf o o t has w ritten four books. Her m ost re cent w ork, Balm 1 G ilead: Jour ney o f a H ealer (1988), a portrait o f her m other, a pioneering child psychoanalyst, was praised for “ raising the standard o f authen ticity in A frican-A m erican biog rap h y .” It was also a C hristopher A w a rd -w in n e r, Los A n g e le s Tim es Book P rize-finalist, and New York Tim es N otable Book o f the year. O ther books include W orlds apart: R e la tio n sh ip s B etw een Fam ilies and Schools (1978), Be yond Bias: Perspectives on C lass room s (1979) (with Jean C arew ), and The Good High School: P o rtra its o f C h a ra c te r and C ulture (1983), which received the 1984 O u tstan d in g Book A w ard from th e A m eric an Educational Research A ssocia tion. In addition to her teach ing, re s e a rc h , and w ritin g , L a w re n c e -L ig h tfo o t sits on num erous p ro fessio n al com m ittees and boards o f d irec tors, including The N ational A cadem y o f E ducation, The Boston G lobe, and the John D. and C atherine T. M acA rthur Foundation. In 1988, she was profiled by Bill M oyers for his W orld o f Ideas series (PB S-TV ). Sara L aw ren ce-L ig h tfo o t has two children and lives in Boston. W hoopi Goldberg a s Corrina “Corrina, Corrina,” a heartwarm ing family comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta, opens at select theatres everywhere on Friday, August 26th. Written, produced an directed by Jessie Nelson, “Corrina, Corrina” is a about a young girl named Molly (Tina Majorino) who has withdrawn into herself since the death of her mother. The housekeeper who comes to take care of her (Goldberg) gradually draws Molly from her shell, and Molly at tempts to play Cupid with her father (Liotta) and Corrina. As her hopes for a romance between the two develops, the relationship turns the heads of sur prised family, friends and neighbors.
